ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Episode 34 is full of #facts.

We cheer after reading Podtrac’ s latest Coronvavirus impact study—downloads and audiences are growing!

We say brilliant to RAJA’s latest study that reports over 10.1m people in the UK now listen to podcasts every week.

We agree with Matty Staudt of Podcast Business Journal, who reminds podcasters that introducing your episodes with random banter only works if you’re FAMOUS. Instead, he suggests a few simple adjustments to hook new listeners.

We hear echo, echo, echo, after reading Matthew Boudreau’s latest piece for Podcast Host, which explains what latency is and how to reduce it.

And, we open the tissue box for anyone who’s ever gotten a horrible review. With the help of therapists, podcasters, and artists, we put together a step-by-step guide for overcoming negative reviews (and spinning them into growth opportunities!). TK LINK WHEN LIVE.

Make your Audio SEO Friendly, a New Study on AI Hosts, a Roundup of Shows to get you Through the Holiday Season, and More.

Show notes:

The podcast industry is rapidly growing, so Sounder is making it easy for audio creators to stay on top of it all with This Week In Podcasting, where we discuss this week’s most exciting podcasting news and tips, all in under 10 minutes.

Episode 18 is wrapped tightly with brand new research.

According to Consumer Technology Association, tech spending during the upcoming 2019 holiday season is projected to reach $97.1 billion in revenue in the U.S. Last week we asked you to guess which tech is expected to be gifted the most this year. Did you guess right?

For the longest time, ranking on search engine results pages was largely a digital writing game. But a new article published by Search Engine Journal reveals Google is starting to index audio now too. Check out these simple steps.

Have you considered stepping out from behind the mic? Well new research done by Amira Valliani, co-founder and CEO of the membership platform Glow, might change your mind. She analyzed data from 460 live podcast show events and found that the live show industry will be worth over $55 million this year. Not sure how to host a live show? Check out this article by Bello Collective.

We interact with synthetic voices on our GPS and personal assistance device, but what about listening to a whole podcast hosted by AI? A new study reveals listener thoughts on the matter. But first, we want to ask you what you think about this AI-generated Joe Rogan clone.

Lastly, holidays can be tough, and it’s okay to admit! Thankfully NPR put together Life Kit, an arsenal of episodes to help us navigate stressful family gatherings, budgeting, holiday work events, and keeping the Santa magic alive with children.

How to be a Great Interviewee, Changes in Audio Advertisements, What Science says About Falling Asleep to Podcasts, and More.

The podcast industry is rapidly growing, so Sounder is making it easy for audio creators to stay on top of it all with This Week In Podcasting, where we discuss this week’s most exciting podcasting news and tips, all in under 10 minutes.

Episode 17 is bursting with success. And sleep.

For all the tips on how to host a great interview on your podcast, there aren’t many that cover how to be successful on the other end of that conversation? Thankfully Colin Grey (@thepodcasthost on Twitter), Managing Director of The Podcast Host, has a few basic pointers on how to be the best interviewee (and which tech is best!). Our favorite tip? Remembering that an interview is not a monologue. *cue the snoring*

Entercom, the second-largest radio company in the U.S., has spent more than $48 million investment in podcast companies this year. Today we cover if this acquisition paid off and what that means for the company.

Some podcast publishers hope programmatic ads can help them make money off older shows by substituting fresh ads in for new listeners. While others are worried that podcasts will become full of advertisements and less about a relationship with host and listener. What do you think?

Have you ever fallen asleep listening to a podcast? Have you ever done so on purpose? Hannah Smothers (@hannahsmothers_ on Twitter) shamelessly admits to seeking out less-than-exciting podcasts to do just that in her article published with Vice. And, surprisingly, science backs this seemingly odd habit. See also: Sleep With Me, by Drew Ackerman (@dearestscooter on Twitter).

And last but not least, our random tech quiz of the week. According to the Consumer Technology Association’s 26th Annual Consumer Technology Holiday Purchase Patterns Study, 186 million U.S. adults, 74%, intend to buy a tech-related gift this year. Can you guess what’s in the top spot?

How to Sound More Confident, One University’s English Department Now Includes Podcasting, the NYPD Brings True Crime to a New Level, and More.

Show notes:

The podcast industry is rapidly growing, so Sounder is making it easy for audio creators to stay on top of it all with This Week In Podcasting, where we discuss this week’s most exciting podcasting news and tips, all in under 10 minutes.

Episode 16 is to the brim with innovation.

We take an in-depth look at how Brazil and Ireland are dominating the podcast industry. For instance, flick through Apple podcast charts on any given day and you will see that Irish podcasts like The Good Glow, The Blindboy Podcast, The 2 Johnnies Podcast, The David McWilliams Podcast, The Laughs of Your Life, and The Stand with Eamon Dunphy are regular fixtures in the top 10. Pretty savage.

We’re also happy to report that true crime fans have been blessed with Break in the Case, a half-hour long podcast that "offers a glimpse at what real-life detectives and officers do during an investigation.” Yes, the NYPD has a podcast. And it’s hosted by former NYPD Detective Edward Conlon. Listen now to find out which case they’re digging into.

For those soft-spoken folks out there, Jonah Berger, an associate professor of marketing at Wharton and a co-author of a new study titled How Voice Persuades gives a few proven cues to sound more persuasive and confident. Whether you’re reading an ad or just want to hook listeners, you’ll want to slip this study-proven tip up your sleeve.

This English Department staff won over our podcasting hearts. They observed the surge of virtual reality, gaming, audiobooks, and podcasting and applied for a grant to built a podcasting lab, among other tools, for their students. All so that all could explore narrative within these evolving genres. The English Department has since seen an increase in enrollment. Liberal Arts for the win.

And what would TWIP be without some inspiration? James Kim, host of a new fictional podcast titled Moonface, never intended to make money off it. “...I just want to make art,” he tells a former colleague. Today, Moonface is an industry favorite. Kim’s podcasting story is such a powerful reminder: have fun, do what you love, and set your intention on making the greatest work you can.

New Tech Removes “Ums” From Your Audio, Airline Adds Podcasts To In-Flight Entertainment, Resources to Support New Podcasters, and More.

Show notes:

The podcast industry is rapidly growing, so Sounder is making it easy for audio creators to stay on top of it all with a weekly podcast called This Week In Podcasting, where we discuss this week’s most exciting podcasting news and tips, all in under 10 minutes.

Episode 14 is chock-full of hacks for new and seasoned podcasters.

Like, wouldn’t it be cool if you could edit out the “uhs” and “ums” from your podcast? Well, Project Sound Seek, a tech tool featured at the Adobe Max Sneaks 2019, event can do just that. “It’s like the Photoshop Magic Wand, but for sound,” says creator Justin Salamon (@justin_salamon on Twitter).

For beginners, our resource round-up includes a brand new book titled Pod Life, a collection of motivating, funny, and insightful stories from a wide range of podcast hosts, like James Wylder (@arcbeatle on Twitter) host of Tales by the Blue Light.

As well as a friendly, comprehensive video series titled Podcasting 101 that Google and PRX created to support early-stage podcasters in everything from recording to scriptwriting to monetizing. Learn from experienced podcast hosts Luvvie Ajayi of the Rants & Randomness and Jesus & Jollof podcasts and Sean Rameswaram, host of Vox Media’s daily news podcast Today, Explained.

You can also take comfort in listening to last week’s episode of School of Podcasting, where host David Jackson (@davidjackson on social) asks fellow podcaster’s their biggest regrets when starting a podcast, so maybe you don’t have to live them yourself.

Other fun podcasting news includes: which satirical news brand will be available in audio come January, and which airline is getting hip with their in-flight entertainment.

Oh, and the US is the largest market for podcasts. Can you guess which country is number two?

That’s all for this week!
